Wusthof Grand Prix II 10-Inch Long Slicer

Awesome
Definitely better than using a Chef's Knife if you want to smooth cuts. I did a catering gig without a slicer and we were doing roast beef. While it wasn't a big deal, it would've been nicer to have slices without that sawed look

great product from excellent source
Bought this knife from amazon 2 years ago. It has never lost its edge and rarely needs anything more than a few passes on the steel. This is a top quality product which my wife (a semi-professional cook) uses constantly - even when I think a smaller knife would do. I/we can recommend it without reservation.

Buttah
Finally, I've found my slicing knife. I have been looking for a long, thin slicing knife for slicing meat and poultry and for filleting and skinning fish and this is it. After being horribly disappointed with Kerhsaw's "Kerhsaw Precision Forged Stainless Steel 8-Inch Slicing Knife" and shopping Victorinox, Dexter (Made in China, very sad for the American company...) and whatever else happened to catch my eye while I was out and about, I found a great deal on this knife at my local restaurant supply store. Fit and finish on this knife are top notch and it came super-sharp out of the box. It's a forged blade, a bit thin and flexible and does the job nicely. It feels good in the hand, it has a nice shaped handle and cuts whatever you have like buttah with a long, smooth stroke. You could probably also use it as a sword in an emergency if you happened to misplace your katana and needed to fight off some ninjas, or...

Wusthof Grand Prix II 6-Inch Carving Knife

German Perfection
I adore this knife, tonite I effortlessly cut a watermelon up, even though it's a little short for that, it's so sharp, it just ran right through the rind! My plan is to obtain 2 or 3 more Wusthof Grand Prix knives. The craftmanship is obvious in the heavy and even feeling of the knife. Last Christmas I gave them as gifts, and everyone in my family commented on how they've become their favorites!

Great all purpose knife
Bought this knife for my father. I have used it numerous times as well. It is a great knife, holds a great edge, and is perfect for carving/ slicing. Not the best for chopping, but its not really made for it. Highly recommend.

Wusthof never disappoints!!!
I have been a fan of Wusthof since i was introduced to them at the first restaurant i worked at. The heft and balance is perfect. The handel is study and feels well.. Just awesome cutlery tools.. only thing to note is that all wusthof knives (like any pro set) are really heavy so i dont recommend for anyone who has weak wrists or are scared of really really sharp knives.. This is a professionals knife which means you can slice your finger to the bone if you make a mistake.. but then, thats just another awesome selling point of these knives...

Wusthof Grand Prix II 8-Inch Cook's Knife

Great weight, balance, and handle.
This is an excellent knife: Hefty without being heavy, with perfect balance and a perfect handle, and perfect blade shape. It has good steel, good finishing, and a good edge. It’s only disadvantage is that it has a full bolster. There are knives with better steel, finishing, edges, and looks, but the GP2 shines where it really matters: weight, balance, and handle comfort.

I have used many of the knives on the market (Forschner, F. Dick, and Messermeister industrial knives, MACs, Messermeister San Moritz, Henckel 4 and 5 star, Chefs Choice Trizor, Global classic and forged, Shun classic, TojiroDP, Wusthof Classic, GP, Cordon Bleu, and Culinar, even the ratty but cheap Farberware Pro Forged and Stainless). If I only owned 1 knife, it would be a toss-up between this and my 10" Forschner Fibrox. It doesn't get 5 stars because it lacks some of the features that are increasingly standard on a knife in this price range, but there is no knife on the market in this price...

Best Knife I've Ever Used
This is, without exaggeration, the greatest knife ever made. I have some decent enough knives that I've used before (Sabatier), but this makes my other chef's knife look like an idiot. It is so effortless to use, and such a pleasure. Seriously, your food will practically cut itself with this knife. Your vegetables will part themselves, and the fat will slice itself away from your meats. I've always loved chopping food, ever since I learned how, but this raises the act from an enjoyable necessity past hobby and into the realm of culinary bliss.

Wicked beauty
Versatile, quick, will pretty easily manage many of the tasks of paring and fillet knives, as well as limited range chef work. Almost dangerous in its sharpness and deftness...almost cut myself a few times, after being lulled into rather reckless technique by a "pointless" santoku.

If you do cabbage, escarole, squash, and other rather big items, an 8-10 inch knife is still necessary.

Balance, design, fit and finish,...a dream. Oh, I forgot: metallurgy...wow.

Wusthof Grand Prix II 5-Inch Hollow Ground Santoku Knife

Will become your favorite knife for any purpose
This is quite possibly the best knife around. The design is perfect, I use it for just about everything in the kitchen - my other knives are becoming jealous! Once you try it you will know why!

Fantastic Knife!
I was a little leary about spending $60 for a single knife, however I have become quite a chef at home and the knives I purchased for under $20 always became dull after just a few uses. I use this knife for everything, from chopping vegetables to slicing meat, its an awesome knife and perfect size.

Outstanding knife!
Great short knife for quick slicing/dicing work. The handle is extremely comfortable and the knife is very light - and perfectly weighted.

Wusthof Grand Prix II 5-Inch Boning Knife

Great Knife!
This was purchased as I continue to build a better quality knife set. This knife does not disappoint. I love the ergos of the handle, and the weight seems really nice. And it is plenty sharp, I have used it for splitting chicken breasts and pork chops for stuffing and it works great. Love it!

Great Boning Knife
Outstanding balance and feel to this knife. I use it to find and separate the joints of the legs and wings when carving Turkey and chickens. It does a great job and is indicative of the quality of Wusthof knives. Highly recommended.

Nice knife
I am very happy with the quality of this knife. I just started culinary school and this brand was recommended by several of the chefs for those that could afford them. I am glad that I made this investment in a tool that I use often.

Wusthof Grand Prix II 8-Inch Carving Knife

High Quality, Amazingly Sharp!
We have owned the older Grand Prix knives for years, but recently dropped the 8 inch carving on the granite and broke the tip. This Grand Prix II seems like the same high quality, but even sharper and has kept its edge longer without sharpening. We find ourselves using it for everything instead of just carving.

Wusthof Grand Prix II 8" Slicer
I want to start this review with saying that if you haven't ever experienced the difference between a truly high quality knife and a standard kitchen knife, I realize that spending the money on them can seem frivolous; but if you do a lot of cooking, they are worth every cent you would pay for them.

I own quite a few of the Grand Prix II knives; I personally prefer this series to the other Wusthof series of knives, but choosing a knife is all about how it feels to you. I find that, for me, the Grand Prix II series fits my hands more fluidly than the other series do. And this knife in particular is one of my favorites. It is so much more than a carving knife, it can be used for just about anything. It's versatile and sturdy, but a little lighter in weight than the 8" chefs knife. The knife is extremely sharp, well balanced and slices with very little downward force needed; plus it stays sharp and needs infrequent sharpening (When you do sharpen, I suggest getting...

Wusthof Grand Prix II 5-Inch Tomato Knife

Floats through tomatoes
A good tomato knife should have a feel like it "floats" through your tomato, even if it is overripe.

This is the only knife I know of that really achieves that effect without needing sharpened regularly. It is good for all soft or semi soft foods. You can use it to cut seeded oranges and use the forked tip to pop the seeds right out.

I have one that is now ten years old with daily use. I have *never* sharpened it, and it still "floats" through overripe tomatoes. :)

Another Quality Knife from Wusthof
This tomato knife is awesome, it slices through tomatoes with the greatest of ease. I was initially concerned about it being serrated (i equate serrated with cheap), but this knife has not lost any sharpness and still slices tomatoes as nicely as the day it was first used. I have not regretting spending a little more money to get these quality knives, I will be a lifelong Wusthof customer.

Fantastic Knife
Wusthof knives are the best and this 5-inch Tomato knife is no exception. It glides through tomatoes and soft skinned fruit or vegetable with the greatest of ease. It's a must in any well-equipped kitchen.

Wusthof Grand Prix II 5-Inch Soft Cheese Knife

Nice knife but...
Nice knife, sturdy and sharp, it works great on soft cheeses as recommended but the Global cheese knife works much better for soft AND hard cheeses. The Wüsthof was difficult to use with a manchego because the blade is "straight", the Global is micro and macro serrated which allows to cut through the manchego like butter if you make the correct wrist twist. Even though, the Wüsthof has a confortable and cool design. Got this one as a gift for a german knives lover. For me... I still prefer the Global as a multitasker, which by the way works great also with tomatoes.

DMT D8F 8-Inch Dia-Sharp Continuous Diamond Fine

DMT D8F 8-Inch Dia-Sharp Continuous Diamond Fine
I've always been a bit hesitant about sharpening with diamond stones, but this one is amazing. A great combination of rapid material removal, coupled with a creamy finish, leaving the user in complete control of the edge. The weight of the metal slab holds the stone to the bench surface on the grippy rubber feet, supplied.
Easy clean up too. I highly recommend this product.

DMT D8F 8-Inch Dia-Sharp Continuous Diamond Fine
Good product. Reasonable price. Good length to work moderately fast on long and large knives. It must be dried after use to prevent some rusting. Better if supported by a holder/base.

California warning label
What 's troubling is the CA. warning label stating: this product contains nickel a chemical known to CA. to cause cancer. Used 3X so far - what I expected from a diamond stone, cuts very quickly, and the stone comes with stick-on rubber feet. The metal base the diamonds are bonded to is quite heavy, I'm guessing about 2lbs with 8"X3"X3/8" dimensions.

Wusthof Le Cordon Bleu 3.5 inch Paring Knife

A connoisseur's paring knife
The Wusthof Classic 3-1/2-Inch Paring Knife is close to perfection as a kitchen tool. But how do you improve on perfection? In this case, by making a paring knife that's a little less idiot-proofed, and a lot more powerful.

Wusthof's Cordon Bleu line has the same handle as their Classic line. But:

- The knives have no bolster behind the cutting area. This gives you a second point at the back of the knife - perfect for things like pricking the skin of a tomato to insure a clean slice, or scoring an apple or potato skin as you rotate it against the blade. However, because there is nothing between your finger and the blade, you have to balance the knife properly as you use it, and pay attention to where the knife is resting in your hand. Yes, you can hurt yourself with this knife. Much more easily than with the Classic.

- The blades are thinner, harder, and more highly polished than...

Sharp, sturdy knife
I ordered this knife to replace one that had been used as an icepick (by a nameless spouse), and this design is even a bit better -- good length and taper -- than the one we replaced (which was part of "Emeril" Wusthof knives). We won't be testing its usefulness as an icepick, however.

Holds an Edge
I bought two Wusthof knives and I love both of them. They are the best knives I've ever owned and worth the money. They are easy to sharpen with the Wusthof sharpener and hold the edge for a long time. I would highly recommend these knives.

Wusthof Grand Prix II 2-3/4-Inch Peeling Knife

Get this - for all your peeling needs
A bird's beak knife it the absolute best way to peel any vegetable or fruit. And this one is the best one I have used to date. It is uber-sharp, and keeps its sharpness. It is light and easy to grip. The beak shape allows you to slide over the vegetable without digging into the "meat". Removing eyes from potatoes? Easy peasy. Can I say any more great things about this? If you haven't used a bird's beak shaped peeling knife before - you don't know what you are missing. If you have - you should upgrade to this one. It is one of the most used knives in my set.

Best knife ever
I cannot live without this knife. It is perfect for preparing fruits and vegetables. It is the most used knife in our knife block.

Great Peeler
Makes me want to tourne again, lol! Not really, but it's a great little peeler. Very sharp and fits comfortably in my hand.

Wusthof Grand Prix II 2-1/2-Inch Trimming Knife

Not for every job but better than a traditional paring knife when you need it
It's a Wusthof, so with any question of the quality or construction aside the real question is whether this is a practical knife for your collection. It's not for everyday use, unless you really are doing very detailed work or coring small fruits or vegetables. A paring knife, with its straight edge, is better suited to small work that includes sectioning, slicing or dicing. But if the blade's too long it can be a little more work for coring or peeling a small item, or for working on a small area of a larger item. That's where this knife is preferable. So, I'd use a 3-4" paring knife for thinly slicing garlic cloves, but I'd use this one for coring a bunch of tomatoes, removing potato eyes, or garnishing with a radish.

sharp - but be careful!
This is an interesting little knife. Sharp - very sharp...and trecherous. Almost cut off the tip of my thumb with it trying to peel an apple. I find it useful for the finer points of deboning, but dangerous and difficult to use as a paring knife. It sits in the block now while I use my straight blade paring knife. Unless you do a great deal of deboning and want a small knife to compliment your 5 inch deboning knife, don't waste your money.

Wusthof Grand Prix II 4-1/2-Inch Utility Knife

The perfect mango knife
The Wuesthof Grand Prix II Utility Knife is for sure the most used knife in our kitchen. We have it now since over 6 years and I expect it to work for the next 20 or so more years. I use it for almost everything and it has the nick-name the mango knife. It works really well on all larger fruits and vegetables, meat and even on some fish. The utility knife is well balanced and very comfortable to hold even for longer working times. It kept its sharp edge for a very long time, but as with all forged knives they should be sharpened regularly.
It is easy to sharpen again; I use the Wuesthof steel or my WMF sharpener (I love that one!) or my Wuesthof ceramic sharpener (I had to find out my favorite sharpener by trying them all).
I am hand-washing my forged knives right after use and I keep them well and dry stored in a wooden knife block. Forged knives should not be washed in a dish washer. The knives are expensive, but I do want to enjoy my daily work in the kitchen and I do...

EXPENSIVE BUT WORTH IT
My son is a chef. When he cooks at my house, he brings his own knives because he doesn't like mine. He recommended that I upgrade a few of my knives to WUSTHOF Grand Prix. I'm so glad I did. Cutting and chopping is a breeze with these knives. They are very sharp.

Worth the price? You decide.
This is a near-perfect knife. The handle design is especially nice, and the blade is long enough to be meaningful. Is it worth the FORTUNE you have to pay? Probably not. A $7 grocery-store utility knife will do the job but not as elegantly. Will you use it every day? Then the additional quality and beauty of this knife may represent good value.

Wusthof Le Cordon Bleu 10-inch Serrated Super Slicer Knife

cordon bleu is a winner
I hadn't heard of le cordon bleu line from wusthof, but they appear to be a fully forged, full-tang wusthof classic equivalent, designed to be a bit lighter. We're as happy with this knife as any other forged wushof purchase. Moves through big crusty loaves or delicate soft white bread like wedding cake.

It's Wusthof....
What else is there to say? Yes it's expensive but it will last a lifetime if cared for properly. I have been buying one knife at a time too complete my set.

A big and very sharp knife
The problem I was solving was cutting large loaves of thick-crusted bread, for which the Wusthof 8" serrated-edge bread knife I already had just wasn't quite large enough - it's best if the knife edge is at least 1.5 times longer than the loaf is wide. I wanted a knife with a full forged blade with bolster, the traditional pattern, as the stamped-sheet blades aren't quite as good, and I prefer to buy one good knife. Going to 9" was marginal and almost as expensive, so I opted for the full 10" blade. It works very well, and the 8" knife now gets little use.

Wusthof Classic 4-1/2-Inch Steak Knife

Approaches ideal.
Firstly, a knife has to cut, or what is it for? These knives take an excellent edge, as is generally true with the forged Wusthof lines. (note, I own about a dozen Wusthof knives, Classic, Gran Prix and Culinar) They easily cut any meat, and as another reviewer noted, they serve well as a utility knife too. It has been my experience that any knife that says "never needs sharpening" is probably a piece of junk. So, yes, once in a while you may need to sharpen your steak knives. Fact is, those cheap serrated knives tear the fibers of the meat, and the moisture quickly runs out, leaving a less succulent steak. It's a trade-off I'm not willing to make.

The handle of this model seems just right to me. It's not slender or delicate, feels sturdy, but it's not clunky or awkward. The blade is sturdy, strong and true, and should last a lifetime. As a nice bonus, they look great, elegant and clean.

I must admit, I've never owned a dishwasher, so I've never been tempted to...

* Kitchen practical * Cook compatable * Wusthof remarkable
As a chef, I put my full faith into Wusthof knives and I love the Wusthof Classic. Although I have at least one or more of Global, Shun, Henckels and Mac knives, my wusthof knives get the most use. To each their own with which knife feels the best in their hand when in use, but I'll swear up and down about the Wusthof Classic handles. These steak knives are lightweight enough to use easily, yet have enough weight that you're unlikely to get careless.

Although these steak knives shouldn't replace a paring knife, they double up as one for the larger fruits/veggies and make slicing an ease.

If you're looking for knives at a low end of expense and don't mind buying new ones in a few years, look elsewhere. If you're looking for great steak knives that will last you a lifetime with numerous uses, look no further! They're worth every dime.

They look very nice!
We've had these for about 4 or 5 years but still haven't used them! Why 5 stars? We've had them in the open about 3' above the ocean the entire time & there's not a speck of corrosion! Handles feel very comfortable & if our others ever give out we'll gladly use them.

Wusthof Classic 6-Inch Serrated Salami Knife

The one knife to have
If you can only afford one decent knife, this one's a good choice. The serrated blade performs every job with ease, from the thinnest slices of tomato or lunch meat to the toughest artisan bread. It's strong, inflexible and sturdy, the 6 inch blade makes it far more versatile than the length of a paring knife and it's extremely sharp. I have a selection of knives, but until the addition of this one, I didn't realize how incomplete my collection was. Suddenly it's the one I reach for all the time.

I use this knife for everything
Like another reviewer stated, this is the one knife to have. It is light with a nice grip, and after two years of use still just as sharp as ever.

It delicately can slice through just about anything with ease and despite being called a "salami" knife, I am not embarrassed to admit I use it as my everyday, everything knife.

I highly recommend this knife, or any knives from the Wustof classic collection!

Wusthof Classic 5-Inch Soft Cheese Knife

Love This Knife!
It does cut through sticky-type substances without sticking or goo all over the knife (I am trying to avoid saying it did a great job cutting the cheese, which it did). I also cut through a chocolate bunt cake with really sticky, wet, gooey icing, and voila, it cut clean over and over again! Love it. Worth every penny!

the best
The Wusthof knives are the best in my opinion. This "cheese" knife is extremely well-made and durable. Fits the hand easily and maintains the edge forever (or at least as long as I have been using it). You pay more for the quality, but it is well worth it.

Perfect for soft cheeses
Note: my knife came with a value-priced set - Wusthof 4-pc. Gourmet Wine and Cheese Set - that was actually priced below the price of the knife along (at the time of this review).

The knife is designed specifically for soft cheeses such as Camembert and Brie, but it works well with cheeses such as gorgonzola and other blues too. What I love is the balance, the sharp blade and the hole pattern that keeps very soft cheeses from sticking to the blade. The product description on this page claims that this is a forged knife - it's actually a stamped knife made from 'forged' steel. That is not a detriment since stamped knives are perfect for cheese and other lighter uses.

Total length is about a quarter inch short of ten inches: the blade is five inches with a poly handle that is 4.75 inches. This is a razor sharp knife that needs to be handled and stored with care. While this is claimed to be...

Wusthof Classic 12-Inch Heavy Cook's Knife

Serious knife for serious work.
This knife is heavy, and not for tiny hands. With that said, it is as close to perfect as I could ask. It is well balanced, with just the right offset between blade and handle when held at the pinch-point. The blade is tall without being too unwieldy. The edge is fine, with a perfect curve for slicing and chopping. The heel is nice, giving the pinch-point a little added heft, but can interfere with sharpening. Still, I've had no difficulty sharpening with Spyderco bench-stones (fine and ultra-fine are all you need, with the periodic hone). I've had this knife for eight+ years and I don't even know how many thousands of onions I've rendered with it in that time.

The thickness makes it a little bit awkward for sashimi cuts of fish, and the size makes it too big for really tiny cuts (think decorative cuts on radishes or carrots). Although it almost has the weight of a cleaver or bone-breaker, the edge is far too fine for that (other than fowl). If it weren't for those items, I...

Wsthof Classic 8-Piece Knife Set in Block

Oustanding knives worth the money
I recently became a homeowner and decided a "decent" set of knives was needed. I'm no chef, so I never really tried good knives--old cheap ones were what was available at the places I lived and that's what I used. Now, I can't imagine trying to cook and not using good steal like this! They feel great in my hand and I never struggle to accomplish any task in the kitchen.

Buying advice: Amazon sells this set for $299 like everybody else. You can get them for that price almost anywhere. So use a coupon and get a discount from the $299 price elsewhere. I used a 20% off coupon at Bed, Bath & Beyond and ended up getting this great set for $240! I like Amazon but not enough to give them $60 for nothing.

EDIT, Jan. 3, 2011: 6 years later, now that this is $350, I would say that after 6 years of use, I am still totally satisfied and would not hesitate to spend $350 to get this today. Although I may upgrade eventually, I have no reason to think these knives won't last a...

Now this is a knife
Until you cut with a Wusthof knife, you cannot comprehend what knives are supposed to perform like. Essentially, these are profoundly heavy straight edge razor blades. Everything they go through melts like butter. Chopping vegetables with them is actually a soothing, zen like experience. I've tried other knives, but none have come close to the precision of Wusthof. The way they feel in your hands, their weight, their amazing balance, is really the mark of flawless German engineering. Think driving a beat up Chevy on a gravel road versus driving a brand new Benz on the autobahn. Get them. Have them professionally sharpened once a year. I guarantee you, if your home goes up in flames, you'll run back in to get them.

Just what hubby wanted
A classic, very sharp slicing knife. It is the closest thing I could find to the somewhat longer slicing knife recommended by Robert Farrar Capon in Supper of the Lamb. The one extra-long knife I found arrived with such minimal packaging that I returned it without trying it. This knife was properly protected for shipping. My husband wanted it for slicing roast meat and after three months of using it he continues to be extremely pleased with it. The length is perfectly adequate.

Wusthof Le Cordon Bleu 6 inch Cooks Chef Knife

Lighter than other Wusthof knives, but just as sharp and well balanced. Choose the right knife for the job.
I have been a kitchen knife collector for many years, and settled for myself on the heavier, complete stainless-steel Wusthof Culinar series. When Amazon's Vine Program asked me to review this knife, I felt qualified to do so, after experimenting with various brands over the years, including Henckles, Furi, Kershaw, Global, and handmade Japanese woodworker, etc.

First, the Cooks knife. It's the most important tool in your knife set. If you can only afford ONE quality knife, this is the one.

The front section of the blade is designed for small cutting jobs like chopping onions, mushrooms, garlic, etc.

The mid-section of the blade is designed for firm or soft food; for mincing leeks, chives, parsley, etc. Be careful NOT to cut through bones or other hard objects as there is a fine edge on these knives. If you find yourself needing a knife that will cut through bone, get a cleaver as well as the chef knife.

The wide surface of the knife...

One of the Best Knives Ever + Information About the Wusthof LCB Line
This is the 2nd Wusthof Le Cordon Bleu (LCB) knife that I've ever owned. I ended up buying it on Amazon via the Cyber Monday Lightning Deal and only did so because I was so impressed by the 8" Wusthof LCB I bought just days earlier. The review that I'm writing has already been written in the 8" review, but since these two knives are exactly the same (with the exception of length), the review about the product stays the same and will be posted after these few intro paragraphs.

First you may be asking "why did you buy another knife" of the same type? Anyone who cares about cooking knows that you should have several knives in your arsenal, especially Chef/Cooks knives. Can you imagine cutting up slices of meat and then cross contaminating that same knife with cutting up vegetables? That's a big no-no. You can get potential harmful bacteria between what you cut. Furthermore, it's a pain to cut meat with one knife, then wash it, then resume cutting. So just like cooks/chefs do,...

VERY sharp, has some heft but not too heavy.

Wusthof Classic 4-Inch Boning Knife (4601-10cm)

I already had a 6 inch boning knife and bought this for smaller tasks. Though it is a small 4 inch blade, the handle is sized like a 6 inch knife so it is easy to grasp when your hands are wet or slippery. It easily cuts up a chicken. It's good for cutting peppers and cleaning the seeds from the insides. It's good for things that you're not going to do on a cutting board and makes a pretty good steak knife at the table too!

Be Careful!

I have been using rice cookers for about 25 years. I loved my old Hitachi cooker but it looks like they no longer make them.

DEFECTIVE..SENT IT BACK
I had to send it back because it would shut off after 10 minutes of cook time. Very disappointed. I've had one of these for years. illy Caffe Normale Whole Bean Coffee (Medium Roast, Red Top). Box of six 8.8oz coffee cans.

Consistent and very high quality
Illy espresso beans are my favorite of all the widely available commercially produced roasted espresso beans. This is the standard medium roast that Illy produces and it is a bit less aggressive and milder tasting than the dark roasts of Lavazza (the other major Italian brand that some people favor).

When properly ground, tamped, and brewed Illy espresso has a delightful aroma and flavor, unmatched by any of the other brands.

Granted, Illy is quite pricey, and I do not use it all the time for this reason. However, you get what you pay for. Usually, I buy my espresso from a small roasting house in the Midwest that produces a decent medium roast substitute that I do not mind using most of the time. But Illy definitely produces a higher quality bean.

One way to judge the quality of roasted espresso beans even before you taste the coffee that they will produce is to look at the evenness of color and size of the beans. The reason is that beans of a uniform...

Great coffee in even better containers!
Coffee taste is a personal preference. I love coffee and Illy medium roast espresso beans are among my favorites. That's not why I buy Illy for the office however. I buy it for use in my office because the beans stay perfectly fresh in the super sturdy sealed cans for a very long time. Three month old cans open as fresh as 3 day old cans. So, I can buy 6 cans at a time, and never run out!

Always great
I've been buying Illy Medium for 8 years now and it's always consistent and always tastes great! I'll buy it again for sure!

J.K. Adams 12-Inch Round Charcoal Slate Lazy Susan

Great trays--poor shipping
Love the trays and the fact that they were mined in New England, but Amazon was lax about shipping. I ordered 4 to use in a grouping. They were sent in 4 separate shipments--each tray sliding lose and unprotected on the bottom of its box with plastic air bags on top. Thus, one arrived with a big chip off its corner. Amazon did replace it, but the replacement was thinner than the original one and does not match my other 3.

Nice....
This slate is big, heavy and wonderfull to look at. The reason for going with slate is to try and keep the cheese cooler (put this in the fridge the night before a party, that way it's nice and cool when it's time for use) which will prolong the life and taste of the cheese, and it's very easy to clean with no scratching or discoloration. I would recommend, but keep in mind this is a big Cheese Tray.

Until further review...
I purchased this item with the intention of pairing it with the J.K. Adams 9 by 9 by 2-1/2-Inch Slate Riser because I thought it might make a very attractive tabletop presentation for not only cheese, but for various condimenti i antipasti. However, just like another reviewer four months previous, my oversized and under-protected shipping carton arrived with no external visible damage, but the slate cheese tray was quite broken due to the absence of adequate packing materials, save the crumpled brown paper substituted for the more protective (and more expensive) bubble wrap. I did order a replacement item, so, until further review... only THREE STARS until I can experience the item in its entirety.

After further review... [updated 11/14/09]

After my initial unpleasant experience with receiving the original order in TWO pieces, I must commend Amazon.com for their speedy and efficient care in...

Perfect Bowls!
These bowls are just what I was looking for in a gift for my daughter. They are a perfect size for soup, cereal, or desserts like apple crisp and ice cream and feel comfortable in the hand, if you want to use them that way. The quality is superior and the decoration is crisp and in lovely colors that look pretty and cheerful on a table. I bought her the "Blue Leaf Cottage" design salad plates to go with these bowls from Amazon too. She was delighted to receive my gift!

Tiger Pdhb30Uwy Water Heater 3 Liter Digital

Expensive but worth the price!
Many Asian households have this appliance but non-Asians seem to not know about it. This is a convenient way to always have boiling hot water at hand for making tea or instant ramen and instant soups. While the typical "American" electric tea kettle requires you to plug in and boil water each time it is turned on (thereby necessitating a wait of at least 3-5 minutes), this water heater boils water and keeps it boiling hot for days until you dispense all of it and have to refill/reboil it. I have found it very useful to have a personal water heater at my office desk (where it is the envy of all my colleagues - yet somehow they are resistant to buying one themselves due to cultural suspicion), and also one at home. One caveat is that since it is constantly plugged in, it may use up a lot of electricity. Also you have to be careful of children accidentally dispensing it and scalding themselves (this model has a "lock" button). Lastly, you should never immerse the appliance in water...

Almost a Very Good Design Except for Power Cord
I got this one to replace a Tiger water heater I got over 16 years ago. That one has to be pumped manually. This one is much better since it pumps the water out automatically.

I like the 6-hr timer (only single setting, single push to activate) that shuts the heater down for six hours then restarts it. This save energy since my house is 50 degree at night and I don't drink in these 6-hr time period. It also heats up the water before I get up. The 3-liter capacity is more than sufficient for my consumption rate of 1.2 L each time. My previous unit was 5-liter, which is too much to heat up.

The lid takes about 2 seconds to get use to. If you use the left hand to open it, you'd need to use your thumb to push down on the front-end which pivots the back end of the retangular latch upward, then use your pointing finger and/or the middle finger to lift the lid up. The lid is removeable for cleaning which is nice.

The insulation is quite good. I set...

A terrific product!!
I bought my Tiger water heater in Korea in the mid 90s while working there. I keep it plugged in all day and love this. I was worried I'd not be able to replace this if mine ever quit on me so I just looked it up and so glad I will be able to get another one if mine ever dies. I have this instead of a coffee pot and really love it. Ever so often, I put a cup or so of vinegar into the hot water (fill to the line), unplug it and let it set overnight to clean all the minerals from my water. The next morning, I just wipe with dish rag inside and then I rinse well and fill up again. This keeps any build-up from inside the kettle. I'm just thrilled I was able to find this online to order when I need one. I might even order one soon as a "back-up" just in case. Yes, it's funny when my friends visit, they have never seen anything like this and act like it's an "Asian" thing. Now I can tell them they can get one, too.

Chef's Design 21-by-12-3/4-Inch Maxi Griddle

This is a Great Griddle!
This griddle is large, but light weight. It cooks evenly and browns well. Clean-up is a breeze--just soap and water. Design is outstanding. Have purchased other double burner griddles and they didn't fit my stove because the handles were in the way. The handles on this griddle are molded, low profile and don't get in the way. The defrost feature is great. I start the defrost in my microwave and finsh on the griddle. No cooked spots on the meat and the defrost time is incredibly short. Great product. Chef's Design Maxi Griddle

Great Product
Needed something large enough to cook multiple food items at the same time and still fit on my grill - This works so well I'm considering cooking all my meals on it, as weather permits !!!!

A product that lives up to the hype
I don't often write about a product unless it is far from what it claims to be. On occaision I do write about a product that does meet expectations and this is one such case. This griddle performs exactly how the product description states with no if, ands or buts. It is probably one of the most gratifying purchases made on Amazon and I've made numerous purchases, most with complete satisfaction. Sounds crazy to talk about a griddle like this but hey it really works. A comment on the people who had negative responses that the grill handles were hot after use. Really? In actuality the grill has molded handles in a sense to make it easier to hold but being the piece is solid metal I don't know what people were thinking trying to lift the grill right off the stove. It's hot! I simply leave it there, enjoy my breakfast, read the paper and then address the grill to be cleaned. It's that simple.

Zojirushi NS-ZCC10 5-1/2-CUP Neuro Fuzzy Rice Cooker and Warmer (White)

Crazy Perfect Rice!
My wife said I was crazy to spend so much just to cook rice. That was until she tried the rice! When she tried the oatmeal, she started telling all of our friends and family about how incredible it is. We've had this machine for 4 months and use it several times per week for both rice and oatmeal.

Rice:
It makes the ultimate rice every time. The best feature is that it keeps the rice warm and perfect for up to 8 hours. It does this by having an excellent seal between the lid and the bowl, plus very accurate temperature control. We picked up a 25 lb. bag of Kokuho Rose pre-washed rice at Costco for something like $0.50 per lb. My family loves it!

Rice Pudding:
Italian rice or Arborio rice - We made this over the Christmas holidays. Just follow the recipe on the bag using the white rice cycle. Serve with a little butter, sugar, and cinnamon, it's heaven.

Oatmeal:
This is my personal favorite. I always wanted to try Irish oats but was put...

What can you say...
Cant find any negative things to say about this made in Japan Zojirushi rice cooker. Make sure when you buy zojirushi items that you get the made in japan version. I know for sure that ZAC10, ZAC18, KCC05, VBC-18 are all made in Japan. The others like MYC, PC models are made in China. I like these much better because they have the legendary quality of made in Japan models. It makes all sorts of rice and you can also make dishes inside the cooker. I also like to steam things like dumplings and chinese bread.

excellent tasting, but...
There is no question that this makes excellent rice. The instructions for making porridge (grits, oatmeal, etc.) make it a little hard to come out as good as the rice. The only real gripe I have about this is the inner pot. It scratched after only about 3 uses. I only use the plastic paddle it comes with, so I am a bit perplexed as to how this happened. I went to the Zojirushi website to order a replacement and was astonished to see that this inner pot costs near $50 to replace!

WMF Vino Foil Cutter

Great!
I used this at a party recently and was in awe... just put it on the bottle, spin, and off flies the top! It feels great in your hand, and looks gorgeous wherever it lands on the table... unlike other foil cutters available. Also - it's very difficult to cut yourself with this thing, and it's also tough to break. I notice it's not available on amazon right now - but I saw it at Williams Sonoma, so you can look there if amazon doesn't have it.

Doesn't get the job done
The cutter is big and heavy--all the things that sounded good in the first review--but it stubbornly refuses to cut through the foil. I think the problem is that there is only one moveable cutter (under your thumb) that is used to press against the other cutters and I can't generate enough pressure with my thumb against just that one cutter to cut the foil. I press and turn and press and turn and it scores the foil but doesn't cut through. You need more leverage to get the job done. Not recommended.

Works well
It workes well and I know because I own a winery were we open bottles all day long. After about 800 bottles it started to ware out and not cut through but we are pretty hard on them and it lasted longer then most others.

Simplex Heritage 2 Quart Tea Kettle, Chrome

Great kettle but the handle gets bubbly underneath
I love my kettle. It is elegant and well crafted. But the handle now has bubbles on the underside directly above the lid. For a tea kettle over $100, I'd expect a more resilient handle

Highly Recommended
Wonderful tea kettle made in England. I've had this kettle for over 9 months and use it every day. It holds up very well and is easy to clean. The whistle is not too loud or annoying but can be heard throughout the house when the water is ready. I would purchase again.

British is best!
I previously purchased a visually identical kettle manufactured in Korea by Old Dutch. It was inferior quality stainless steel & after several years of use began to leak where the spout was sautered onto the body of the kettle. This kettle is worth the difference in price. As a dedicated Anglophile I can say British really is best.

Oggi Wine Cooler with Freezer Inserts

Wine Coolers
These wine coolers work great at our winery, Plum Hill Vineyards. The inserts last all day. I will use them for the tasting wines as well as for customers who buy a bottle of white and want to keep it cool while they are hanging out, enjoying the views and music. I love the coolers and will be buying more.

OGGI Wine Cooler - Just What I Wanted
This is exactly what I was looking for; something to keep the wine cool out on the deck. No longer need to walk in the house and get the wine out of the fridge. Thanks

Works Like A Charm!
I've only owned this wine cooler for two weeks, and it's already my favorite wine accessory. It looks classy and there's absolutely no condensation on the bottle. It can hold wine, champagne, and even oversized bottles--and it REALLY keeps your wine at the perfect serving temperature: red or white. I just love it!

Nordic Ware Restaurant Cookware 12 Inch Skillet

No point in spending more on non stick
No question that high quality cookware is easier to work with, lasts longer and produces better results. I've been using All Clad for years and swear by it. However, the coating on all non-stick cookware, whether it's All Clad, Calphalon or whatever, wears out over time, no matter how careful you are. So why pay $150 for the name All Clad on a 12" non stick pan when $50 gets you a very similar pan with the same coating from Nordicware? I actually have 8" non sticks from both Nordicware and All Clad and I detect no difference in heft, durability or results. The value is so good that I bought an 8", 10" AND 12" Nordicware for less than one 10" All Clad.

Great Product
I recently bought a 8", 10" and 12" Nordic Restaurant skillets with lids and I am very happy with the purchase. The skillets are everything they are advertised to be. You notice it from the moment you pick it up. They are heavy and solid and I am sure will give years of great service. And to top it off they are made in the USA...to me that means something.

great pan, great price
This is no nonsense restaurant quality cookware. It doesn't have a 4 layer bottom made of layers of copper, iron, Damascus steel and silver. It's not coated with titanium or plated with gold. The handle isn't graceful and elegant. It isn't very pretty. Who cares? If you have to cook a lot, and don't always treat your pans like exquisite kitchen jewelry, this one is for you. This is one tough pan. Nordic is not kidding with the name; this is commercial grade stuff.

The no-stick coating works very well, and it's tough enough to stand up to occasional use of metal utensils. The rubber handle cover comes off for cleaning, and to allow you to put the pan in the oven; you can bake in it if you want to. The metal handle is attached with giant rivets; it's never ever going to come lose. Use the rubber handle cover; it gives you a nice big gripping surface and it stays cool.

It's not going to last forever. But I've got 3 years out of mine so far, and it's still in great...

Victorinox Knife Case for 10 Knives, Black

just barely a workable solution
The storage case is basically a workable solution. It has a hard outer shell that may be good for added protection in some situations. However, I have blade protectors and therefore I can only use 8 of the 10 knife slots.

Additionally, the knife slots are not always wide enough to hold the larger knives.

Perfect solution for safely transporting knives!
I'm very pleased with this purchase. I use this to carry my collection of Forschner (Victorinox) Fibrox knives when I'm cooking or carving meats away from home. My 10" chef's knife, 10" slicer, 8" chef's knife, 8" bread knife, carving fork, paring knives, etc. fit perfectly and are well protected. The net pouch even provided sufficient space for a couple of serving spoons/forks. The straps on the fastening clips are adjustable to allow for changes in overall case thickness as the number of knives increases or decreases. The protective flap (shown folded diagonally in the photo) provides extra assurance that the knives stay in position. I no longer worry about nicking the blades (or nicking myself!!!) when transporting my knives. Highly recommended!

"Barely Workable" is about right, nevertheless an attractive knife roll.
I am upgrading my knife set for culinary school to Victorinox, from Mercer, and decided to get this knife roll as a replacement for my old one. The outside of the roll is very similar to my old one, fabric with an embroidered Victorinox logo between the clasps. Overall, it is a very attractive package to transport your knives in and has plenty of pockets and a nice big zippered mesh pouch for holding extras like shears, a potato peeler, needle nose pliers, and any other must have gadgets. A couple business card holders are handy to have and some thermometer/pen pockets are another nice touch.

The one fault that could be a deal breaker for some, also mentioned in a previous review, is that the cinch down straps on the outside of the roll do not have much slack to them. While I am waiting on a few more knives to be delivered, I decided to move over a few of my old Mercer knives; which have bigger handles. The larger "comfort" handles of the Mercers do not fit very...

Wilton Armetale Scroll Serving Tray, Oval, 20-Inch by 12-3/4-Inch

Love this tray
I owned a tray exactly like this one for a few years and used it all the time. Unfortunately someone placed it in the dishwasher and destroyed the finish so I ordered a new one. It's beautiful, you can heat and serve things on it but just make sure you wash by hand and it will stay beautiful

Perfect plate
Perfect for serving hot food from the grill!
The price was right too! It is easy to clean up and resists scratching.

WMF Vino Variable Wine and Processo Corkscrew

Simple, Easy to Use and Sturdy
When my "rabbit" style wine opener broke on me a few months ago, I did my research online to find a replacement. The rabbit that I had been using for five years was a sturdy, all-metal one that opened bottles in a second and never jammed. The fact that it lasted five years is testament to its all metal design.

Unfortunately, I could not find any all-metal "rabbit" style openers on Amazon. Many of those that were advertised as "metal" or "steel" were only partly made of metal and partly of shiny, steel-colored plastic. My mom has one of these and it's horrible. The plastic handle gives when you press on it and feels like it's going to crack. It also needs much greater force to open since much of your power is lost to the bending plastic. So, I broadened my search and found this WMF Vino corkscrew got lots of great reviews, and decided to give it a try.

Several months and 100 bottles later and I can say that this corkscrew is great. Its simplicity is its greatest...

A REAL de-corker.....
This is a fun little guy. If you enjoy manually uncorking. Kind of an art form. But this one is SMOOTH. Due mostly to the teflon coating on the spiral. The cork leaves the bottle before it reaches the top of the arch. The 18/10 smooth stainless really gives it an elegant feel and is quite substantial in weight as well. The dark plastic neck adjusters move outwardly to fit any neck size, but are only a centering mechanism, not a 'holding' device. A very well made thing, but not for the uncorking challenged.

MWF wine bottle opener
I purchased one of these wine bottle openers about 10 years ago at the Robert Mondavi Winery in St. Helena, California. It is so smoothe and easy to use and the best I have ever used! I recently ordered 4 of them from Amazon to use as gifts and plan to order more in the future.

WMF Vino Ultimate Waiter's Friend Corkscrew

DANGEROUS TOOL
Obviously designed by some one who never uses a corkscrw in a professional setting. The knife is on the same end as the boot and very close to the worm, it is counter intuitive and clumsy to use. Can easily cut yourself. Also, since when should a waiters' key be a heavy piece of steel? If you work as a wine steward and open dozens if not hundreds of bottles per night you need a reliable, light weight tool.
Relegate this one to the corkscrew curiosity collection, there have been many over the past 100 years.

Well made solid product, not for professional use
I have been bartending for 12 years, that being said I have used and come across many wine keys, corkscrews in my day. This particular opener appealed to me for my home, having friends over and entertaining. After receiving this product, this is my professional opinion. It is a well made, well constructed product. It happens to look and feel as good in your hands as well as it's made. The one issue I might mention is the screw is a little stiff and hard to pull out, that may loosen up over time with usage. If you are looking to purchase this as a tool for work, I would probably steer you in another direction. There are lighter, easier to manipulate corkscrews than this one. They may not be as well constructed or look as nice as this one, but at work I prefer function over form.

Disappointing
I have many fine and some disappointing WMF bar tools. This one is poorly conceptualized and executed. The knife/foil cutter as someone wrote prior is uselessly dangerous. The rest is standard fare and too weighty.

Screwpull S1115-31 Pocket Corkscrew, Black

The World's Best Corkscrew
I received this corkscrew in green about 15 years ago, and it has not given us one bit of trouble in all that time. It is the most amazing device -- flawlessly designed and excellent at extracting corks. It's lightweight (won't chip a counter or tile floor if it falls) and streamlined to take up very little space in a kitchen drawer. After 15 years, and many bottles of wine, a crack has finally made it become wobbly (but still working). I came on the website today, to get a new one, in anticipation of its eventual demise. I couldn't bear the thought of opening wine without it. Buy this corkscrew -- its a wonderful gadget.

AMAZING !!!
My six month up date is actually 13 months. This little beauty is still pulling. All kinds of corks from all over the world , including the plastic type, just keep gliding out with very little effort. Italian Pinot Grigo have the densest corks and are very difficult to pull with any other corkscrew. Not a problem for this one, its just another cork. As for my "flimsy plastic" comment below, this hasn't shown any wear at all. Really amazing when you see the lack of quality in manufacturing today. TEN STARS
PS They have a 4 for $ of 3 offer May 08 so I've ordered extra for gifts.

The box arrived, my new 5 star cork puller....YES!! OH NO!! This light weight piece of flimsy plastic won't survive the first cork. What happened, the reviews are always dead on. Don't let its looks fool you. Not only does it hold up, you'll use more muscle opening a screw cap. Gently turn the handle and the cork glides out so smoothly you don't know its out unless you hear the pop. Turn the...

If you can't open a bottle of wine with this corkscrew, you shouldn't be drinking.
This is by far the simplest method of extracting a cork from a bottle. I gave one
to an elder relative who is proud of his complete lack of any physical skills. He
loved it. All you do is turn a crank in one direction.
That one clockwise motion extracts the cork, ruptures the capsule and then
removes the cork from the worm. The device itself is as well-made as any plastic
thing can be. The worm is coated for easy in-out. The Screwpull is bulky: a handi-
cap in a pocket, but no problem in a drawer. There is a full discussion of its '
a tiny treatise on cork-removal and a clearer illustration at the Amazon page for
The New Short Course in Wine.
In a few years, corks will be a rarity but in the meantime, Screwpull is the easiest
device for cork-pulling.
